Having continuous access to a camera for every single moment of our lives, we find that we are constantly taking photos, whether its to capture the cute little presentation of dinner we put together or the cutest little smile of our baby’s first tooth. here are my top 5 tips for helping you take stunning portraits.
1) Subject
Know what your subject is and what you are trying to capture. Your image is telling a story and knowing your subject of the image can help the audience understand what you are trying to say.
2) Composition
The Rule of Thirds is what has been shown to be pleasing to the eye. The Rule of Thirds is having imaginary lines on the image at 1/3 and 2/3. When following the rule of thirds you place the subject into the center of the frame, on one the lines, or at a crossing point. You can also use lines to help the eye travel through the image.
3) Background
Look around and pay attention to where you are placing your subject. Keep your background simple and eliminate distracting points. Zooming in to your subject can help to reduce distractions of the background.
4) Lighting and Shadows
When lighting your subject you need to look for the light. If you are using natural light, pay attention to the placement of the lighting and how it is falling on to your subject. Avoid harsh lighting on people’s faces. Shadows can be used to help add interest or flatter your subject, so play with them and have fun.
5) Keep it simple
Making sure you have the subject the main focus is important. To help achieve this, keep distracting elements that appear in your image limited.
