Can you believe how fast this first birthday came along?! This session typically lasts up to one hour. Of course this is dependent on baby. The baby’s mood, clothing, and your expectations will all set the tone for your session. We will probably spend quite a bit of time chasing your little one around as they explore the studio. Be ready to sweat!
Clothing suggestions: I suggest bringing 2-3 solid colored or simple outfits. I love when clients email me quick pics of the outfits they’re bringing so I can plan ahead.
Bring on The Cake!
We can order your cake for you! We work with a lovely local bakery, and can provide the cake for a small additional fee. I will pick up and have the cake at the studio for your session. If you would like me to order a cake, please let me know at least 20 days in advance so that there is plenty of time to place an order.
If you are providing a cake, I suggest placing an order about a month in advance with your bakery. We suggest either a 4 inch or 6 inch cake so that it does not appear larger or block the baby in the images. Please note that the dyes from cake frosting can stain clothing. Want to try something different, other than a cake? You could bring a stack of pancakes, a pumpkin pie, a box of donuts, a watermelon, or even a bowl of spaghetti! I’ve seen it all and am open to ideas!
Before your little one starts smashing, we will do some regular milestone photos to document this momentous time in their life. Afterwards we will go ahead and start the cake smashing. Some kids dig right in to their cake and others need some encouragement. Be ready to get your hands (and sometimes clothes) dirty showing your little one how it’s done.
Please know that not all kids enjoy cake or the cake smash experience. I’ve found that kids who aren’t used to sweets, or who don’t like getting their hands dirty, don’t usually do well. So I suggest grabbing a cupcake and something mushy like mashed potatoes and doing a trial run (or two) with your little one if you think this might be an issue.
Lastly, we can do a splash session capturing baby in a bath set up. This is a wonderful way to get some cute bath photos and clean off the cake mess.
Things to bring:
- 2-3 solid colored or simple outfits and a bathing suit for bath portion of session if you would like for baby to be covered. I love when clients email me quick pics of the outfits they’re bringing so I can plan ahead.
- Toys or heirlooms you may want baby photographed with
- Cake if you did not order through our recommended baker
- Baby’s soap for bubble bath
- If you are doing a cake smash, consider bringing along a container for any leftovers that you might want to bring home.
I hope these tips have been helpful in getting you prepare for your baby’s session!
